I can't recall exactly when I started making my own bread at home, but I know for sure that growing up in my non-quite standard Malaysian family, bread was always an essential staple for us.
Sure, most Malaysians have breakfast with some sort of bread (roti canai, tose, and all other South-Indian Mamak Style breads), but for us, buttered toasts and kaya (coconut jams) , along with boiled eggs is always at the dining table.
That, and the fact that one of my favourite aunts baked a lot when I was a kidand she lived two streets away from me. Her kids would grumble that they don;t buy the "gardenia bread" because their mum made breads... but to me, that was such an amazing advantage.
Anyhow... I do remember going with mum for a potluck lunch with her highschool friends when I was 12, where everyone brought home made food to share. I am pretty sure it's one of the first time I confimed you
